BREAKING: INEC Moves to Overturn Court Verdict on Primary Election Timetable
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has filed an appeal against the recent judgement of a Federal High Court in Abuja which nullified the commission’s timetable for political party primaries and the submission of candidates for elections.
INEC also submitted a motion seeking a stay of execution of the ruling pending the determination of the appeal.
The commission filed the notice of appeal on Monday, April 25, following last Wednesday’s judgement by the Federal High Court which voided the timelines earlier issued for the conduct of party primaries and candidate nominations.
The court decision had generated reactions among political stakeholders, as the timetable is considered a crucial part of preparations for upcoming elections.
INEC insists that the timelines were issued in line with its constitutional responsibilities and is now seeking judicial clarification through the appellate court.
