Atiku to ADC: Nigeria Needs Experienced Leader, Not Experiment in 2027

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reiterated his commitment to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stressing that the party must present a competent and experienced presidential candidate capable of addressing Nigeria’s worsening economic and security situation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the country’s current challenges require tested leadership rather than political rhetoric or experimentation.

According to him, Nigeria is grappling with economic hardship, insecurity, rising debt and weakening institutions, making it necessary for the ADC to field what he described as its strongest and most prepared candidate.

He warned that the country could not afford “a learning-on-the-job presidency,” insisting that leading a complex nation like Nigeria demands experience, sound judgment and the ability to unite people across ethnic, religious and regional divides.

Atiku also argued that governance should be based on competence and practical knowledge, not social media popularity or catchy political slogans.

The former presidential candidate referenced his tenure as vice president between 1999 and 2007, noting that the economic reforms implemented during the period helped promote growth, fiscal discipline and debt relief.

He further maintained that defeating an incumbent administration in 2027 would require political strategy, resilience and broad national acceptance.

Atiku urged ADC delegates to place national interest and competence above sentiment in choosing the party’s candidate, adding that Nigeria needs leadership focused on rescue and effective governance.
