Fresh political realignments have emerged within the African Democratic Congress in Sokoto State as Former Governor of the state and Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has withdrawn from the race to return to the Senate under the ADC platform.
Also stepping down from the contest is Ibrahim Lamido, who reportedly withdrew following a reconciliation deal brokered among leaders and stakeholders of the party.
Sources familiar with the arrangement disclosed that Tambuwal agreed to support former commissioner and ex-Nigerian ambassador to Jordan, Faruk Malami Yabo, for the Sokoto South senatorial ticket.
Despite Lamido’s withdrawal, the ADC has yet to announce its consensus candidate for the Sokoto East Senatorial District.
In another major development, former Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, Manir Muhammad Dan’iya, has emerged as the consensus governorship candidate of the ADC ahead of the 2027 elections.
Dan’iya’s emergence followed days of consultations and behind the scenes negotiations among leading aspirants and party stakeholders.
Some of the politicians who had earlier indicated interest in the governorship race include former PDP governorship candidate in the 2023 general election and Ex SSG, Mallam Sa’idu Umar, former Minister of Transport, Yusuf Suleiman; Senator Ibrahim Lamido; former ambassador Faruk Malami Yabo; and House of Representatives member representing Gada/Goronyo Federal Constituency, Bashir Usman Gorau.
Meanwhile, the member representing Silame/Binji Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mani Maishinku Katami, is expected to secure the ADC ticket for Sokoto Central Senatorial District.
