“I’m Now a Freelance Politician,” Says Bala Mohammed as He Hosts Peter Obi in Bauchi

Bala Mohammed, the Governor of Bauchi State, has described himself as a “freelance politician,” saying he is currently not firmly tied to any political party amid ongoing political realignments in the country.

The governor made the statement on Thursday while receiving Peter Obi and other stakeholders from the South-East in Bauchi. He said the meeting formed part of wider consultations focused on national unity and possible political cooperation ahead of future elections.

“Neither PDP nor ADC is standing alone. I am a freelance politician now, and his party is also in limbo. We are looking up to the judiciary,” Mohammed said.

He added that opposition figures across party lines were engaging in discussions, noting that some details of the talks would remain private.

“Certainly, we are all in the opposition, and that is why I say this is a political discussion. We will not disclose everything we discussed,” he stated.

The governor also hinted that the current political climate could produce new alliances capable of reshaping future contests.

“We cannot operate without a platform. At the end of the day, the current political situation may help unify us and strengthen our chances of winning elections,” he said.

Mohammed praised Obi’s visit, describing it as a step toward healing divisions and promoting national unity.
“He is talking about unifying the country, building bridges, and creating a new tomorrow for Nigeria. That is what we stand for as a state and as a people. We feel highly honoured by this visit,” the governor added.

Earlier, Peter Obi said his trip was aimed at seeking cooperation from leaders across the country, especially in Bauchi State.

“My purpose is to solicit support and cooperation among stakeholders, particularly from Bauchi State, in our quest to unite this country,” Obi said.

He also dismissed rumours that the meeting was about political defections.

“We are not inviting each other into political parties; we are inviting ourselves to build a better Nigeria,” Obi stated.
