Sokoto Reconstructs Kware Dam, Procures 250 Tractors to Boost Agriculture — Commissioner
The Sokoto State Government has intensified efforts to enhance food production with the reconstruction of irrigation facilities and procurement of modern farming equipment.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Tukur Alkali, disclosed that the administration of Governor Ahmed Aliyu is committed to achieving food sufficiency through strategic investments in agriculture.
According to him, the government has completed the long abandoned Kware Irrigation Scheme, which spans about 450 hectares and is expected to create employment opportunities for thousands of youths
He noted that agriculture remains the backbone of the state’s economy, with over 90 percent of residents engaged in farming and livestock production. Sokoto, he added, is the largest producer of onions in Nigeria and across the sub-Sahel region.
Alkali explained that upon assuming office, Governor Aliyu prioritized agriculture under his 9 Point Smart Agenda and approved the purchase of 250 tractors to modernize farming activities.
The administration also revived abandoned irrigation projects to support year round farming, especially during the long dry season.
He further revealed that the government distributed fertilizers, agrochemicals, and other farm inputs to farmers at subsidized rates, while also employing 200 veterinary doctors in 2024 to boost livestock development.
In addition, the state partnered with the Federal Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI to establish a cold storage facility for onions aimed at reducing post harvest losses.
The commissioner also disclosed that contracts have been awarded for the reconstruction of the Lungu Dam in Wurno Local Government Area, alongside plans captured in the 2026 budget to rehabilitate more irrigation schemes across the state.
Alhaji Alkali emphasized that the administration continues to match its commitments with tangible actions to ensure sustainable agricultural growth and food security.
