PLAC Slams Nyesom Wike Over Alleged Threat to Seun Okinbaloye, Demands Apology
The Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) has strongly condemned what it described as “threatening and dangerous remarks” allegedly made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, against a journalist.
In a statement issued on April 5, 2026, PLAC expressed concern over comments reportedly directed at Seun Okinbaloye of Channels Television during a media chat. The group said the minister’s remarks, which suggested violence against the journalist, were “deeply troubling, unacceptable, and profoundly dangerous.”
PLAC warned that such rhetoric from a high-ranking public official undermines democratic norms, freedom of expression, and media independence. According to the organisation, statements of this nature could intimidate journalists and discourage citizens from expressing dissenting opinions.
The advocacy group emphasized that Nigeria’s democracy depends on open dialogue, tolerance of criticism, and respect for fundamental rights, including press freedom. It noted that public officials have a responsibility to uphold these values, not weaken them.
PLAC also raised concerns that the comments were made in a publicly funded forum, stressing that such platforms should promote accountability and constructive engagement not threats.
The organisation called on the FCT Minister to retract his statement immediately, Issue a public apology to the journalist, Channels Television, and Nigerians, and commit to upholding democratic values and media freedom.
PLAC further urged all public office holders to exercise restraint and responsibility in their public communications, warning that the normalization of violent rhetoric poses a serious risk to Nigeria’s democratic stability.
The group reaffirmed its solidarity with journalists and media institutions, calling for the protection of civic space and freedom of expression across the country.
