FG Assures Plateau Security Under Control After Deadly Jos Attack

The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that the security situation in Plateau State remains under control, despite the recent deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba community, located in Jos North Local Government Area.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, gave the assurance during a press briefing in Abuja, where he also conveyed the condolences of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to victims and their families.

Describing the incident as tragic, the minister stated that security agencies responded swiftly following distress calls, with troops deployed under Operation Enduring Peace to restore order. He noted that the area was immediately secured, while search and clearance operations are ongoing to apprehend those responsible.

According to him, the government’s response includes intelligence-driven operations, enhanced surveillance, and coordinated patrols across Plateau and the wider North-central region. He added that these measures have helped to contain the situation and prevent further escalation.

The minister also revealed that President Tinubu recently held a high-level meeting with security and intelligence chiefs to assess the situation and strengthen response strategies. Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has also been invited for further consultations aimed at achieving lasting peace in the state.

At the state level, authorities imposed a 48-hour curfew in Jos North to stabilise the area and support ongoing security operations. Governor Mutfwang had earlier visited the affected community and assured residents that those behind the attack would be brought to justice.

While acknowledging public concern over recurring violence, the Federal Government maintained that the attack does not signify a total breakdown of national security but rather a criminal act within a conflict-prone area.

The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice, warning that perpetrators will be tracked down and prosecuted. Nigerians were also urged to remain calm, avoid spreading misinformation, and cooperate with security agencies.

The Angwan Rukuba incident adds to a series of recent violent attacks across parts of the country, raising ongoing concerns about security and governance.
