Over 1,000 Sokoto Residents Benefit from Free Dental Outreach

No fewer than 1,000 residents of Sokoto State have benefited from a free dental and medical outreach organised by the Usman Danfodiyo University Dental Students Association (UDUDSA) in collaboration with Colgate and the Nigerian Medical Association.

The outreach, held to mark the 2026 World Oral Health Day, aimed to promote proper oral hygiene and expand access to dental care, especially among underserved communities.

President of UDUDSA, Abdulrahman Mustapha, emphasised that maintaining good oral health is vital to overall well-being, describing it as a basic human right. He urged residents to adopt regular dental check-ups as part of their healthcare routine.

Participants received free dental examinations, treatments, and professional consultations. Cases requiring advanced attention were referred to the dental clinic of Usman Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital.

As part of its support, Colgate donated toothpaste and provided logistics for the programme. The company’s Marketing Manager in Sokoto, Saaheed Abdulsalam, highlighted the importance of using fluoride toothpaste to protect against tooth decay and strengthen enamel.

The outreach also extended to a local orphanage, where children were educated on proper oral hygiene practices and given toothpaste. An official of the home, Aliyu Yusuf Abdallah, praised the initiative.

Organisers noted that the programme also provided an opportunity for dental students to gain practical experience under professional supervision.

They added that the success of the outreach demonstrates the importance of partnerships in improving healthcare delivery and expressed optimism that similar initiatives would be replicated across the country.
