Wike-Backed PDP Seeks Reconciliation After INEC Publishes Candidates’ List
The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed its commitment to reconciliation and party unity following the publication of the list of candidates for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a statement issued on Sunday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, described the publication of the candidates’ list as a significant milestone that has dispelled speculation that the PDP would be unable to present a presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
According to him, the inclusion of the party’s presidential candidate, Professor Sandy Onor, and his running mate, Alhaji Babangida Umar, on the INEC list confirms that the PDP remains firmly in the race for the presidency.
“The publication of the names of our presidential candidate, Professor Sandy Onor, and his running mate, Alhaji Babangida Umar, has effectively laid to rest the sustained misinformation and propaganda by those who claimed the PDP would not field a presidential candidate,” Mohammed said.
He added that the development vindicates loyal party members who remained steadfast despite months of uncertainty and misinformation.
“Today, the facts have prevailed, the law has taken its course, and the PDP has once again been vindicated. We commend our loyal members who refused to be swayed by deliberate falsehoods,” he stated.
The party also expressed appreciation to INEC, the judiciary, and security agencies for carrying out their constitutional responsibilities in line with the rule of law.
Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Mohammed said the PDP would prioritize reconciliation, inclusiveness, and internal cohesion. He extended an olive branch to the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led faction and other aggrieved members, urging them to reunite in the collective interest of the party.
“We reiterate our commitment to genuine reconciliation, inclusiveness, and internal cohesion. We extend an open hand to every aggrieved member because the collective interest of the party is greater than individual differences, and unity remains the surest path to restoring the PDP to its rightful place,” he said.
The spokesman also welcomed returning members and new entrants into the party, expressing confidence that a united PDP would be better positioned for the 2027 general elections.
