Tinubu Welcomes Rescue of 308 Abducted Citizens in Kwara, Niger, Orders Stronger Early Warning Systems
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed the successful rescue of 308 Nigerians abducted in separate attacks in Kwara and Niger states, while directing security agencies to strengthen early warning and rapid response mechanisms nationwide.
The rescued victims comprise 163 residents abducted from Woro Community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State and 145 others from Niger State.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the victims were rescued from the Kainji Lake National Park Forest in New Bussa Local Government Area of Niger State.
The rescue followed a coordinated, intelligence-driven operation by the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC), involving personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Police Force.
The Presidency described the operation as the largest rescue operation ever carried out by the joint security team on the same day.
President Tinubu commended the leadership and personnel of the security agencies for their bravery, inter-agency collaboration and commitment to safeguarding the lives of Nigerians.
“The successful execution of this intelligence-led operation demonstrates the growing efficiency and collaboration among our security services. I commend our gallant men and women in uniform for their bravery and unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigerian lives,” the President said.
The rescued citizens are currently receiving first aid and essential medical attention at the medical facility at Wawa Cantonment.
The Presidency said that after their medical evaluations, the victims would be formally handed over to their respective state governments for comprehensive care and reunification with their families.
While expressing satisfaction over the safe return of the abducted citizens, President Tinubu stressed the need for stronger national security infrastructure to prevent similar incidents.
He directed security agencies and relevant stakeholders to immediately strengthen early warning systems, improve community-level intelligence gathering and enhance rapid response capabilities to prevent future attacks and abductions.
President Tinubu also reassured Nigerians that his administration remains committed to eliminating security threats, protecting vulnerable communities and restoring lasting peace across the country.
