Tinubu Approves ₦46bn for Kano Airport Second Runway Reconstruction

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved ₦46 billion for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the second runway at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), as part of efforts to modernize Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the approval on Tuesday during the commissioning of the newly remodeled Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo Domestic Terminal at the airport in Kano.
According to a statement issued by the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Tunde Moshood, the runway project is expected to improve operational efficiency and strengthen Kano Airport’s status as one of Nigeria’s leading international aviation hubs.
Keyamo said the Federal Government had prioritized Kano Airport for major infrastructure upgrades due to its strategic role as the commercial gateway of Northern Nigeria. He added that President Tinubu’s administration remains committed to transforming the aviation sector under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“The President has approved the sum of ₦46 billion for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the second runway so that Kano Airport can compete with other international airports around the world,” the minister said.
He also disclosed that work has commenced on the upgrade of the airport’s Hajj Terminal, with contractors already on site, describing the projects as part of a broader plan to improve passenger comfort, operational efficiency, safety, and service delivery across Nigeria’s airports.
The domestic terminal, which was commissioned during the event, was named after the late Mallam Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the development of Nigeria’s aviation industry.
Speaking at the ceremony, Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, said the upgraded terminal reflects FAAN’s commitment to providing world-class airport facilities and improving passengers’ travel experience.
Chairman of FAAN’s Governing Board, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, commended President Tinubu and the Minister for prioritizing aviation development in Kano, noting that the ongoing projects would further reinforce the state’s position as Northern Nigeria’s leading commercial and aviation hub.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by top government officials, aviation stakeholders, and representatives of the Kano State Government.
