Sylva Resigns From APC, Says Party Has Lost Its Way

Former Bayelsa State Governor, Timipre Sylva, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) with immediate effect.
Sylva announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the APC chairman in Ward 4, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State on Monday.
The former governor said the decision followed consultations with his family, associates, colleagues and supporters.
Sylva, who described himself as a founding member of the APC, expressed disappointment over what he called the abandonment of the ideals upon which the party was established.
He said he could no longer remain in a political party whose leaders appeared to operate on the belief that “all is fair in politics.”
According to him, the APC-led administration has disappointed many Nigerians, adding that he sees neither a credible effort nor the possibility of restoring the party to what it once represented.
Sylva described the APC as a “floundering ship” whose future appeared to have been determined by what he called its “irredeemable load of iniquities.”
He expressed confidence that Nigerians would use the next general election to vote for the country and bring an end to what he described as the present government’s “stranglehold” on Nigeria.
The resignation comes amid legal and investigative controversies involving the former governor.
In November 2025, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) declared Sylva wanted over an alleged case involving conspiracy and dishonest conversion of $14.86 million.
He was also listed among the defendants in a 13-count charge filed by the Federal Government in connection with an alleged plot to overthrow the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Sylva, in his resignation letter, said he had forwarded a copy of the document to the EFCC, accusing the commission of acting more like an organ of the APC than an independent institution of the state.
He acknowledged that his resignation could lead to what he described as a renewed “witch-hunt” against him and his associates, but said he was prepared to accept the risk.
Sylva’s resignation adds to the political developments within the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
