Sokoto 2027: Haido Promises Free Healthcare for Pregnant Women, Elderly People If Elected

The 2027 governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Sokoto State, Dr. Shamsudeen Aliyu Haido, has promised to introduce free healthcare for pregnant women and elderly people if elected governor.
Haido disclosed this while speaking during an interview on the Rigar Yanci programme aired on 3rd Eye Africa TV, where he outlined some of the social welfare policies he intends to implement.
He said improving the welfare of residents would be one of the immediate priorities of his administration, arguing that people struggling with hunger and basic needs could not effectively contribute to human capital development.
The NDC candidate said his administration would provide free medical care for pregnant women, alongside allowances designed to support them during pregnancy.
He also proposed free healthcare for citizens aged 65 and above.
According to him, his administration would introduce a Elderly People Card that elderly residents could present at government hospitals to access medical treatment without paying medical fees.
Haido said the proposed scheme would ensure that elderly people, particularly those who could not afford healthcare, would have access to essential medical services.
He also promised to establish special care centres for persons living with disabilities and other vulnerable members of society.
According to him, vulnerable persons should not be left on the streets or forced into begging but should instead be provided with appropriate care, support and rehabilitation.
Haido said his proposed social welfare programmes would form part of a broader effort to improve the quality of life of residents and strengthen human capital development across Sokoto State.
He said the programmes would be implemented as part of his administration’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of citizens if elected governor in 2027.
