Sokoto State Police Command says it has neutralised a suspected armed bandit and recovered an AK-47 rifle with ammunition following a foiled attack on Daraye Village in Wamako Local Government Area.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, the incident occurred at about 1:35 a.m. on Friday, July 4, after the command received a distress call that a large number of armed bandits were attacking the community.

The statement said operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the VCRU, and other tactical teams were immediately deployed to support officers at the Wamako Divisional Headquarters. The security teams reportedly engaged the attackers in a prolonged gun battle, forcing them to retreat into the forest with suspected gunshot wounds.

Police said one suspected bandit was neutralised during a subsequent bush-combing operation. An AK-47 rifle and a magazine loaded with 28 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition were recovered from the suspect.

The command added that confidence-building patrols have been intensified in the area, while neighbouring divisional headquarters have been placed on high alert to intercept any injured suspects seeking medical attention.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, commended the officers involved in the operation and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling banditry and protecting lives and property across Sokoto State.
