Presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, and his running mate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, have paid a visit to the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III where they discussed issues concerning national unity, security and responsible leadership.
The meeting was held at the Sultan’s Palace in Sokoto as the political leaders continued their engagements with key stakeholders in the state.
During the meeting, Obi and Kwankwaso expressed concern over the security situation in different parts of Nigeria and stressed the need for a coordinated approach to addressing challenges threatening peace and national cohesion.
They also highlighted the importance of bringing Nigerians together across ethnic, religious and regional lines in order to strengthen the country’s unity and stability.
The Sultan, in his remarks, emphasised the responsibilities attached to political leadership, reminding those entrusted with public office that they would be held accountable for their decisions and actions.
He stressed that leadership should be centred on serving the people, protecting their interests and promoting peace and stability.
The engagement provided an opportunity for the political leaders and the traditional institution to exchange views on some of the major challenges confronting the country.
Although details of the discussions were not fully disclosed, the meeting underscored the role of traditional institutions in promoting dialogue, peace and social cohesion amid Nigeria’s security and political challenges.
The visit also comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with stakeholders increasingly engaging traditional rulers and communities on issues of governance, security and national development.
