NUJ Sokoto to Hold Congress on Journalism and Political Campaigns

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council, will on Saturday, September 19, 2026, hold its monthly Congress at the NUJ Press Centre along Zuru Road, Sokoto.

The Congress, scheduled to commence at 9:00 a.m., will focus on the theme, “Journalism and Political Campaigns: Between Public Interest and Political Influence.”

Professor Tanko Yahaya Baba of the Department of Political Science, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, is expected to deliver the keynote lecture at the event.

According to the Council, the Congress will provide an opportunity for journalists and other media practitioners to examine the role of journalism in democratic governance, particularly as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Discussions will focus on professional standards in political reporting, including editorial independence, fairness, accuracy and the protection of public interest while covering political activities and campaigns.

The Sokoto State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Sambo Bello Danchadi, has also been invited as the Special Guest of Honour.

Chairman of NUJ Sokoto State Council, Comrade Usman Mohammed Binji, urged members of the Union and other stakeholders in the media industry to actively participate in the Congress.

Binji described the gathering as an important platform for professional reflection, knowledge sharing and capacity building ahead of the 2027 elections.
