NIS, IOM Review Nigeria’s Border Management Strategy for 2027–2031
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has commenced a review of Nigeria’s national border management strategy ahead of the 2027–2031 policy cycle.
The review was conducted during a three-day strategic workshop held in Niger State, with support from the European Union (EU).
Speaking at the workshop, Comptroller-General of the NIS, Kemi Nandap, said the revised strategy must be guided by reliable migration data, effective implementation mechanisms and sustained collaboration among relevant government agencies and development partners.
Nandap said the review was aimed at assessing the progress recorded under the outgoing strategy while identifying emerging priorities and challenges requiring attention in the next policy cycle.
According to her, the new framework should be practical, clear and responsive to evolving border management and security challenges facing the country.
The NIS Comptroller-General further said the strategy should strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to provide leadership in integrated border management across Africa.
The workshop brought together senior NIS officials and key partners for strategic discussions and technical sessions on the future direction of Nigeria’s border management framework.
Participants reviewed recommendations, prioritised interventions, explored financing options and validated the proposed strategic priorities for the 2027–2031 cycle.
The NIS said the engagement further demonstrated its commitment to working with national and international partners to strengthen border management and ensure continuous improvement in migration governance.
