Shettima: NELFUND Removing Financial Barriers to Higher Education

Vice President Kashim Shettima has described the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) as a landmark initiative of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration, saying it is helping to remove financial barriers to higher education for children from poor and vulnerable families.
Shettima stated this when he received the management team of the University of Abuja, led by its Vice Chancellor, Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, at his office in the Presidential Villa on Wednesday.
According to the Vice President, the education loan scheme is providing crucial financial relief to families that might otherwise struggle to fund the education of their children.
He said the administration had deliberately positioned NELFUND as an important instrument for promoting equal access to education and reducing poverty.
“The Nigerian Education Loan Fund, established by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is a landmark initiative that has provided crucial financial relief to the children of the poor and removed the financial barriers to higher education,” Shettima said.
He added that the Fund was designed to serve as a social equalizer by ensuring that financial circumstances do not prevent qualified Nigerian students from pursuing higher education.
“The administration has positioned the Fund as a vital social equalizer and a primary mechanism for poverty alleviation, as well as the advancement of education in Nigeria,” the Vice President said.
Shettima’s remarks explain the Federal Government’s emphasis on expanding access to tertiary education through financial support for students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
