COAS Mourns Former Finance Minister Abubakar Alhaji, Hails Legacy of Service

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General W. Shaibu, has condoled with the family of former Minister of Finance, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, describing his death as a significant loss to the nation.

Shaibu conveyed his condolences in a letter dated August 4, 2026, addressed to the deceased’s son, Honourable Aminu Abubakar Alhaji.

The Army Chief described the late elder statesman as a man of integrity, generosity and strong commitment to public service, noting that he lived a life marked by honour, dignity and service to humanity.

According to him, Alhaji was widely respected for his wisdom, integrity and dedication to Nigeria, with his contributions to fiscal governance and national development earning him admiration within and outside the country.

Shaibu described the deceased as a distinguished elder statesman, diplomat, former Minister of Finance and exceptional leader whose legacy would continue to inspire those who knew him.

“His demise is a great loss not only to your family and loved ones, but also to friends, associates and the entire nation,” the COAS said.

He assured the bereaved family of the Nigerian Army’s solidarity during the period of mourning, while praying for strength and comfort as they come to terms with the loss.
