CDS Urges Increased Investment in Indigenous Space Technology for National Security
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, has called for sustained investment in indigenous space technology, research and innovation to strengthen Nigeria’s national security and improve the operational capabilities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).
Oluyede made the call during the inaugural Defence Space Administration (DSA) Day celebration, held under the theme, “Space Power and National Security.”
In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the CDS commended the DSA for its contributions to Nigeria’s defence capabilities through the development and deployment of space-based technologies.
He particularly highlighted the launch of DelSat-1, the establishment of geospatial intelligence infrastructure, the deployment of a Modular Earth Observation Outpost at the Headquarters of Operation HADIN KAI, and the commencement of academic activities at the Defence Space School in Orogun.
The defence chief urged the administration to intensify indigenous research and development, enhance the reliability and security of space-based products, and ensure their effective integration into joint military and inter-agency operations.
He noted that strengthening these capabilities would help the Armed Forces respond more effectively to evolving security threats and emerging operational challenges.
Oluyede also stressed the need for closer cooperation among the military, academic institutions, industries and relevant government agencies to accelerate local innovation and expand Nigeria’s ability to utilise space technology for defence and national development.
Earlier, the Chief of Defence Space Administration, Major General Philip Ilodibia, called for stronger collaboration among the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy and Nigerian Air Force to improve coordination and operational effectiveness.
Ilodibia also advocated sustained partnerships with the National Space Research and Development Agency, Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited and other stakeholders to advance the country’s space capabilities.
He said such collaborations were essential to harnessing space technology in support of national security objectives and Nigeria’s broader development aspirations.
