BREAKING: Babachir Lawal Joins NDC, Backs Obi-Kwankwaso Ticket

By Nafiu Muhammad Lema

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), about three months after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over allegations of manipulation of the party’s presidential primary.

Lawal announced his defection in Abuja on Tuesday after being formally received by leaders of the NDC. He also declared his support for the party’s presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The former SGF said his decision was driven by concerns over insecurity, hunger, poverty, ignorance and other challenges confronting Nigerians.

According to him, Nigerians who are concerned about the country’s current situation should support a political platform that, in his view, represents an alternative future.

Lawal said he was convinced that joining the NDC would contribute to efforts to achieve the party’s objective of electing Obi as President and Kwankwaso as Vice President in 2027.

Receiving Lawal into the party, NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, described the former SGF as an experienced political mobiliser and activist with extensive knowledge of Nigeria’s political landscape.

Dickson said Lawal’s experience would be valuable to the party, adding that he would be assigned a leadership role in coordinating the party’s activities and campaigns in the North-East.

He said the NDC was pleased to have Lawal join its ranks and expressed confidence in his ability to provide guidance and direction to the party’s candidates and campaign structures in the region.

Lawal’s move to the NDC follows his resignation from the ADC approximately three months ago.

At the time, he alleged that the ADC presidential primary was manipulated to favour former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

In his resignation statement, Lawal said he could no longer remain in a party whose primary process he considered fundamentally flawed.

He further alleged that results from the primary were altered and that declared winners in some areas were allegedly replaced by other candidates.
