Sokoto Higher Education Ministry, ASUU Begin Talks on Outstanding Staff Entitlements
The Sokoto State Ministry of Higher Education has commenced discussions with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) branches at Sokoto State University (SSU) and Shehu Shagari University of Education over outstanding entitlement discrepancies and concerns surrounding the implementation of academic staff allowances.
The meeting, held on Monday, September 7, 2026, was led by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Isa Muhammad Maishanu, alongside the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Comrade Ismaila Ibrahim Binji.
The ASUU delegation was led by the Chairman of the SSU branch, Dr. Bello Musa, with other representatives of the union in attendance.
During the engagement, ASUU presented several concerns affecting academic staff, including discrepancies in various levels of the Consolidated University Academic Structure (CONUASS) and the non-capture of some professional allowances under the current implementation.
Responding to the concerns, Prof. Maishanu assured the union that the ministry would give the issues raised due attention.
After extensive deliberations, both parties agreed that the ministry would conduct a comprehensive review of the concerns presented by ASUU and submit its findings and recommendations to the Sokoto State Governor, Dr. Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, for consideration and necessary action.
The commissioner reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to constructive engagement with ASUU, stressing that legitimate concerns regarding the welfare and entitlements of academic staff would be addressed through dialogue, due process and mutual understanding.
Also present at the meeting were the Director of Administration, Sadiya Isa; Director of Quality Assurance, Malami Shuaibu; and Director of Finance, Muhammad Anwar Sadat.
The meeting ended on a positive note, with both sides expressing commitment to sustained dialogue and cooperation towards resolving the outstanding issues in the interest of academic staff, the institutions and the development of higher education in Sokoto State.
