Make Sokoto Green Initiative Flags Off 2026 Tree Planting, Distribution Programme
The Make Sokoto Green Development Initiative has commenced its 2026 Planting and Distribution Programme with tree-planting activities held at the Sokoto Rima River Basin Development Authority Primary and Secondary Schools, as well as the Rikina Community Model Primary School.
The initiative, which is aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and encouraging communities to take greater responsibility for protecting the environment, also featured practical training for pupils and community leaders on how to nurture and maintain the newly planted seedlings.
Speaking during the exercise, the Executive Director of Make Sokoto Green Development Initiative, Nasir Babi, said the programme was designed not only to plant trees but also to build a culture of environmental responsibility among young people and communities.
Babi stressed the importance of ensuring that the seedlings survive beyond the planting exercise, noting that proper care and regular monitoring are essential to achieving the initiative’s environmental goals.
He also encouraged the pupils to see themselves as environmental ambassadors who can inspire their families and communities to embrace tree planting and other practices that contribute to a greener environment.
Community leaders who participated in the exercise welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that would help raise environmental awareness and encourage greater community participation in protecting and improving the local environment.
The leaders also appreciated the training provided to pupils and residents, saying the knowledge would help ensure that the planted seedlings are properly tended to and protected.
The Make Sokoto Green Development Initiative said it would continue to promote tree planting, environmental education and community participation as part of efforts to build a greener and more sustainable Sokoto.
