FGC Sokoto Staff School PTA Pushes for N100,000 Teachers’ Minimum Wage

The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of the Federal Government College (FGC) Staff School, Sokoto, has urged the school management to review teachers’ salaries, proposing a minimum monthly wage of N100,000 alongside a N30,000 monthly lesson allowance to improve staff welfare and educational standards.
The resolution was reached at the association’s Annual General Meeting AGM held on Saturday, where parents also called for greater transparency in the school’s financial management and stronger collaboration between the PTA and the school authorities.
Speaking at the meeting, PTA Chairman, Malam Jamilu Sidi, said teachers deserve better remuneration considering their critical role in shaping the future of the pupils. He warned that poor pay could affect teachers’ commitment and ultimately impact learning outcomes.
According to him, the current administration has implemented several initiatives, including the introduction of an electronic payment system to enhance accountability, teacher capacity building programmes, provision of rain gear for staff on duty, and annual awards for outstanding pupils in the National Common Entrance Examination.
However, Sidi noted that teachers’ salaries had only been reviewed from N55,000 to N60,000 describing the increment as inadequate in the face of the country’s economic challenges.
He also urged the school management to always engage parents before any upward review of school fees to ensure transparency and mutual understanding.
Parents at the meeting echoed the call for improved welfare for teachers. Mrs. Loveth Bello appealed for the rehabilitation of damaged internal roads and improved infrastructure, while Alhaji Sani Abdullahi-Wamakko described the current salary structure as unacceptable, especially for teachers with over 20 years of service.
He maintained that the school generates sufficient revenue from tuition fees and enrolment to support the proposed salary increase, urging the PTA leadership to pursue the matter with the management.
In his response, the Headteacher, Mr. Chiwuzor Victor, thanked parents for their unwavering support and revealed that the school’s water supply had been restored through the installation of a solar-powered borehole. He appealed to the PTA to assist in providing solar electricity for the nursery section.
Also responding, the representative of the Principal of FGC Sokoto and Chairman of the school’s Board, Sulaiman Ibrahim, assured parents that all resolutions adopted at the AGM would be presented to the school management for consideration and necessary action.
