Presidency Rebuts Peter Obi Over Resignation Call, Defends Tinubu’s Performance
The Presidency has strongly criticised the NDC Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, describing his recent call for President Bola Tinubu’s resignation as “childish, misplaced, and an unwarranted distraction.”
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency dismissed Obi’s remarks comparing Nigeria’s governance system to the United Kingdom, arguing that such comparisons ignore Nigeria’s presidential system, where the president serves a fixed four-year term.
The statement further claimed that recent election outcomes in parts of the country demonstrate growing public support for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his party, urging Obi to await the 2027 general elections rather than “haranguing” the President on social media.
On security, the Presidency maintained that significant progress has been recorded under the current administration, citing rescue operations, neutralisation of terrorist groups, and increased investment in military technology and intelligence. It also accused Obi of selective criticism, referencing his tenure as governor of Anambra State.
On the economy, the statement argued that Nigeria has recorded improvements in GDP growth, foreign reserves, oil production, and government revenue since 2023, while also pointing to gains in the stock market and increased investor confidence. It further credited ongoing reforms for stabilising key sectors and boosting state revenues.
The Presidency also defended its infrastructure and social intervention programmes, including road projects across geopolitical zones, the introduction of compressed natural gas (CNG) policies, student loan schemes, and efforts to stabilise academic calendars in tertiary institutions.
Reacting to Obi’s claim that Nigeria is in its worst condition, the statement described the assessment as “inaccurate,” attributing current economic pressures partly to global geopolitical tensions affecting commodity prices.
It concluded that President Tinubu remains focused on reforms, national stability, and long-term development, adding that criticisms calling for resignation are politically motivated rather than constructive accountability.
