A member of the House of Representatives representing Gada/Goronyo Federal Constituency of Sokoto State, Hon. Bashir Usman Gorau, has expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in the country, accusing security chiefs of failing to stem the tide of terrorist attacks, killings and kidnappings.
Speaking during plenary on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, the lawmaker lamented that terrorists and bandits were increasingly taking control of communities across the country, describing the situation as alarming.
“What are you doing? Nigeria is being taken over by terrorists. Nigeria is bleeding” Rep. Gorau said while questioning the leadership of the nation’s security agencies on the floor of the house.
The lawmaker also questioned the effectiveness of the security architecture, stating that lawmakers were left in the dark about the efforts being made by service chiefs to tackle insecurity.
He cited recent attacks in his constituency, revealing that bandits invaded Gorau town, his hometown, killing one person and abducting 10 women and children. He also disclosed that armed criminals attacked Rimawa town, where 24 people were kidnapped and several innocent residents killed.
Gorau further criticized the service chiefs for their alleged lack of engagement with members of the National Assembly, stressing that security agencies have a constitutional responsibility to protect lives and safeguard Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
“The primary responsibility of the military is to secure the territory of Nigeria, but unfortunately terrorists are taking over parts of the country” he said.
His remarks came amid growing concerns over the deteriorating security situation nationwide and contributed to calls within the House for greater accountability from security agencies.
Following the debate, the House of Representatives summoned the nation’s service chiefs and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to appear before lawmakers and provide a comprehensive briefing on efforts being made to address the escalating security crisis across the country.
