Gov. Aliyu Reaffirms Commitment to Justice Reforms as AGF Urges Grassroots Legal Access

Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the justice system, promoting the rule of law, and improving judicial infrastructure.
The governor made this known while declaring open the 2026 Caliphate Bar Law Week of the Nigerian Bar Association NBA, Sokoto Branch, themed “Secured Nation, Secured Future”.
Aliyu said his administration has prioritized judicial independence and efficiency, disclosing the promotion of 14 judges and Khadis, alongside the provision of official vehicles to enhance their performance.
He further announced the award of a N4 billion contract for a new High Court complex, as well as the rehabilitation of the Shari’ah Court of Appeal and construction of three Ministry of Justice office complexes.
The governor also highlighted continued support for the NBA, including sponsorship to National Executive Committee meetings and the donation of an 18-seater bus.
At the event, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi urged legal practitioners to strengthen grassroots justice delivery to improve national security.
Fagbemi stressed that many security challenges stem from unresolved local disputes and called for increased access to justice, alternative dispute resolution, and pro bono services.
He also revealed that the federal government has secured hundreds of terrorism related convictions and advocated for the establishment of state police to enhance community security.
The Attorney General commended President Bola Tinubu for ongoing reforms, including efforts to strengthen local government autonomy.
Also speaking, Minister of State for Works, Barr.Bello Goronyo, praised Governor Aliyu’s investment in infrastructure and institutional development.
Chairman of the NBA Sokoto Branch, Rasheeda Muhammad, commended the governor’s support, noting that over 300 participants registered for the event.
A highlight of the occasion was the launch of the Caliphate Law Journal, supported with a N30 million donation from the state government. The NBA also honoured Governor Aliyu with an “Exceptional Leadership Award”.
