Benisheikh Attack: Tinubu Hails Fallen Soldiers as Heroes, Calls for National Support for Military

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid tribute to Nigerian soldiers killed in a recent terrorist attack in Benisheikh, Borno State, describing them as “unforgettable heroes” who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the nation.

In a State House press release issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of troops from the 29 Task Force Brigade under Operation HADIN KAI. The soldiers were killed during a coordinated attack by insurgents on their camp in the early hours of Thursday, April 9, 2026.

President Tinubu extended condolences to the Nigerian Armed Forces and the families of the fallen soldiers, urging them to remain strong in the face of the painful loss. He commended the bravery and resilience of the troops, noting that they fought gallantly to repel the attackers and prevent further devastation in the surrounding communities.

According to the President, ongoing military offensives against insurgent groups, including Boko Haram, have significantly weakened their operations. He described the latest attack as a desperate response by the insurgents to sustained pressure from Nigerian forces.

The President specifically acknowledged the sacrifice of the soldiers led by Brigadier-General Oseni Omoh Braimah, assuring that their deaths would not be in vain. He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting the military with improved welfare and necessary equipment to prosecute the war against terrorism.

President Tinubu also called on Nigerians and the media to stand firmly with the Armed Forces, urging citizens to avoid actions or narratives that could undermine troop morale. He stressed that the fallen soldiers remain irreplaceable heroes whose sacrifices must be honoured and respected.

He further extended condolences to the government and people of Borno State, reaffirming the Federal Government’s resolve to work closely with the state to restore lasting peace and security.

The attack, confirmed by the Defence Headquarters, explains further the ongoing security challenges in the North-East, even as military operations continue to intensify against insurgent groups.
