INEC Extends Deadline for Party Membership Registers, Adjusts 2027 Election Timetable

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revised aspects of the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election, particularly the submission of political parties’ registers of members.

The decision followed a meeting between the Commission and political parties held on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, in Abuja, where concerns were raised over the earlier timeline.

Originally, political parties were expected to submit their membership registers between April 1 and April 21, 2026. However, after reviewing the concerns and aligning with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, INEC approved an adjustment to the schedule.

Under the revised timetable, political parties are now permitted to conduct their primaries from April 23 to May 30, 2026. The Commission stressed that strict compliance with this timeframe is necessary to ensure a smooth electoral process.

INEC also reiterated that parties must submit their registers of members at least 21 days before their primaries. As a result, the final deadline for submission has been extended to May 10, 2026.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to credible elections and urged all stakeholders to adhere to the updated guidelines.

The statement was signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, on March 27, 2026.
