President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated four new national commissioners and two Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fill vacancies arising from the expiration of tenure of some officials.
The nominations are subject to screening and confirmation by the Senate.
According to a statement issued on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu has also reappointed Dr Bala Bila as the national commissioner representing the North-East.
Among the newly nominated national commissioners is Professor Mustapha Aliu, who will represent the North-West, replacing Professor Abdullahi Zuru.
Bashir Muhammed Umar has also been nominated to represent the North-Central, succeeding Professor Muhammad Adamu.
For the South-West, the President recommended Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, the current Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State, to replace Professor Cornelius Ajayi, whose tenure expires on October 24, 2026.
The President also nominated two new Resident Electoral Commissioners to fill vacancies in Ekiti and Jigawa states.
They are Dr Samuel Akinjide Akinleye, a retired permanent secretary, who will represent Ekiti State, and Zahradden Basiru Sanusi from Jigawa State, who will replace Professor Saidu Ahmed Babura.
President Tinubu has urged the Senate to expedite the screening and confirmation of the nominees in view of the forthcoming general elections scheduled for January next year.
The nominations come as INEC continues preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the commission expected to play a critical role in ensuring credible and transparent electoral processes.
