Sokoto Governor Sets Up Committee to Probe Clerics’ Controversial Utterances

Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has approved the appointment of an Advisory Committee to examine controversies surrounding statements made by some Islamic scholars in the state, which the government said have contributed to a breach of peace.
The committee, approved on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, is expected to examine the issues surrounding the controversial utterances and advise the state government accordingly.
According to a press release issued by the Spokesperson to Governor, the committee is mandated to “critically examine the position of Shari’ah on the issues raised by Mal. Musa Lukuwa and advise the Government accordingly.”
The committee is also expected to submit its report to the government “within 14 days.”
The 14-member committee is chaired by Mal. Yahaya na Malam Boyi, (Sarkin Malamai), while Barr. Gandi Umar Muhammad, MNI, will serve as Secretary.
Other members are Mal. Muhammad Isah Talatar Mafara; Mal. Bello na Malam Boyi; Prof. Mansur Ibrahim, MNI; Prof. Mansur Ibrahim Sa’id; representatives of Izala Kaduna, Izala Jos, Tijjaniyyah, Qadiriyyah, Jama’atu Nasril Islam and the Sultanate Council; the Commissioner for Religious Affairs; and Mal. Lawal Maidoki.
The government said the committee was constituted in response to controversies arising from utterances by Islamic scholars “which have led to a breach of peace.”
The committee’s terms of reference specifically focus on the Shari’ah position on the issues raised by Malam Musa Lukuwa, with its recommendations expected to guide the government’s response to the matter.
