Boat Capsizes in Sokoto, Several Passengers Feared Dead
Several people are feared dead after a boat carrying passengers capsized in Gorau community, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday when the boat, said to be carrying about 40 passengers comprising men, women and children, overturned.
The exact number of casualties remained unclear as of the time of filing this report, with rescue operations reportedly still ongoing.
Efforts to obtain confirmation from the Sokoto State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the command’s spokesperson, Ahmed Rufai, could not be reached for comment.
The latest incident has renewed concerns over the safety of waterways in Sokoto State, where boat mishaps have continued to claim lives.
In September 2025, a boat carrying residents of Zalla-Bango village who were fleeing armed bandits capsized in Sabon Birni Local Government Area, resulting in the deaths of all 10 passengers on board. Their bodies were later recovered by villagers and fishermen.
Weeks earlier, another boat accident occurred at Garin-Faji in Sabon Birni LGA, where more than five people reportedly died while 21 others were rescued. Another boat mishap was subsequently recorded at Kojiyo village in Goronyo LGA.
Boat accidents remain a recurring tragedy across Nigeria, with overloading, inadequate safety measures and failure to use life jackets often increasing the risk of fatalities.
The Gorau incident has therefore heightened calls for stronger enforcement of waterway safety regulations, proper passenger limits and compulsory use of life jackets to prevent further loss of lives.
