NYSC, Federal Character Commission Deepen Collaboration on Fair Representation

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the Federal Character Commission (FCC) have renewed their commitment to promoting fairness, inclusiveness and equitable representation in Nigeria’s public service.

The commitment was reaffirmed when the NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission, Hon. Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Nafiu said the NYSC remained committed to upholding the Federal Character Principle in its operations, describing it as an important instrument for ensuring balanced representation of Nigerians from different states, geopolitical zones, ethnic groups and religious backgrounds.

He commended the FCC for its continued efforts to promote fairness in recruitment, appointments, promotions and the distribution of personnel across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The NYSC Director General also reaffirmed the Scheme’s adherence to due process, government regulations and established guidelines in the discharge of its statutory responsibilities.

According to him, the close relationship between the mandates of the NYSC and FCC provides an opportunity for both institutions to strengthen national unity, inclusiveness and equal opportunities for citizens.

Nafiu assured the Commission that the NYSC would continue to collaborate with the FCC to ensure compliance with guidelines governing personnel placement and other matters relating to the implementation of the Federal Character Principle.

In her response, FCC Executive Chairman, Hon. Hulayat Omidiran, said the Commission was established to promote fairness and inclusiveness in government institutions by ensuring equitable representation of the various components of the Nigerian federation.

Omidiran urged ministries, departments and agencies to strictly comply with the Commission’s policies and guidelines, noting that adherence to the Federal Character Principle is critical to maintaining public confidence and addressing perceptions of marginalisation.

Earlier, Nafiu held an interactive meeting with the FCC Committee on Social Development, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, chaired by the Federal Commissioner representing Plateau State, Hon. Pam Bot-Mang.

The engagement focused on strengthening institutional collaboration and promoting equity in recruitment, postings, promotions and appointments across government establishments.

The renewed partnership between the NYSC and FCC is expected to further promote transparency, fairness and national integration in Nigeria’s public service.
