Sultan Has No 2027 Favourite Candidate, Media Team Says, Debunks Tinubu Endorsement
The Media Team of the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has dismissed reports suggesting that the Sultan has endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election in the 2027 election.
The Media Team described the reports circulating on social media as misleading and urged Nigerians to disregard what it called an attempt to drag the Sultan into partisan politics.
In a statement signed by Prince Bashir Adefaka on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, the team said the Sultan, as a father figure to all Nigerians, could not openly support any particular candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
It explained that the Sultan’s traditional and religious roles require him to offer fatherly, royal and spiritual guidance and blessings to politicians and other Nigerians who seek his counsel, regardless of their political affiliations.
“The Sultan’s doors cannot be shut against anyone who comes to him, regardless of political affiliation or persuasion. His Eminence has consistently demonstrated that he is the father of all and will continue to relate with all Nigerians without discrimination,” the statement said.
The Media Team warned against attempts to misrepresent the Sultan’s position or associate him with the campaign or candidacy of any individual ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to the statement, the Sultan remains committed to promoting peace, unity, stability and peaceful coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse peoples and faiths.
It also urged media practitioners and social media users to verify information before sharing reports that could mislead the public or unnecessarily involve traditional and religious institutions in partisan political controversies.
The Media Team reiterated that the Sultan’s role is that of a father to all and not that of a partisan political actor.
