SOCHEMA Honours UNICEF for Outstanding Contribution to Healthcare Development in Sokoto
The Sokoto State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (SOCHEMA) has honoured the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) with an Award of Excellence in recognition of its outstanding contribution to healthcare development and expansion of health insurance coverage in Sokoto State.
The award was presented under the leadership of the Director-General of SOCHEMA, Yusuf Abu Abdulkarim, as recognition of UNICEF’s sustained support, commitment and partnership in promoting equitable, affordable and quality healthcare services across the state.
According to the DG, the honour reflects the Sokoto State Government’s appreciation of UNICEF’s strategic partnership in strengthening the health sector and supporting the healthcare transformation agenda of Governor Ahmed Aliyu.

He said UNICEF’s technical assistance, financial support and health systems-strengthening initiatives have contributed significantly to improvements in maternal and child healthcare, immunisation, nutrition, primary healthcare services, healthcare financing and institutional capacity.
A major achievement of the partnership, Mr. Abdulkarim noted, is the enrolment of 37,229 beneficiaries into the Sokoto State Health Insurance Scheme across 71 accredited healthcare facilities from 2023 to date.
He affirmed that the development has helped expand access to quality healthcare while reducing the financial burden of healthcare services on vulnerable households.
