Tinubu Commends Team Nigeria as Athletes Win 24 Medals at Commonwealth Games
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Team Nigeria for its outstanding performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, after the country secured 24 medals.
Nigeria finished the competition with 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals, placing it among the top-performing nations at the multi-sport event.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised the athletes for demonstrating resilience, discipline, determination and excellence in representing Nigeria.
The President said the medal haul was a reflection of the hard work and perseverance of the athletes, while commending them for flying the Nigerian flag with dignity and pride.
According to him, the experience gained at the Games would provide a strong foundation for greater achievements in future international competitions and inspire young Nigerians to embrace commitment, discipline and patriotism.
Tinubu also acknowledged the contributions of the Nigeria Olympic Committee and the National Sports Commission to the development of sports and the support provided to Nigerian athletes.
He extended his appreciation to the athletes, coaches, technical officials, medical personnel, administrators and others whose efforts contributed to Nigeria’s successful participation in the Games.
The President assured that his administration would continue to invest in sports development, strengthen sporting institutions, improve training facilities and create more opportunities for Nigerian athletes to compete successfully at continental and global levels.
Team Nigeria recorded notable performances across several disciplines, including athletics, weightlifting, wrestling, boxing and para-sports.
