Security Crisis Rooted in Poor Governance, Poverty — Bala Mohammed

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has attributed Nigeria’s persistent security challenges to poor governance, widespread poverty, and socio-economic hardships, stressing that the country’s insecurity reflects deeper systemic failures.

The governor made the remarks on Sunday during a condolence and solidarity visit to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, at his residence in Ibadan following the abduction of over 40 pupils and teachers from Yawota and Ahoro-Esinle communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Mohammed, who was accompanied by leaders of the Allied People’s Movement (APM), including the party’s National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, said citizens must play a more active role in addressing insecurity by rejecting criminal collaboration and electing competent leaders.

According to him, insecurity is closely linked to poverty, poor governance, and the difficult living conditions faced by many Nigerians.

He urged citizens to take responsibility for shaping their future by refusing to aid criminal elements and ensuring that credible leaders emerge through the electoral process.

The Bauchi governor emphasized that leadership at all levels—local, state, and federal—must be held accountable for addressing the factors fueling insecurity.

Speaking on the abduction in Oyo State, Mohammed expressed sympathy with Governor Makinde and the families of the victims, noting that the prolonged captivity of the pupils and teachers had become a source of national concern.

He commended Makinde’s efforts toward securing the release of the abductees and expressed optimism that ongoing measures by the Oyo State Government would soon yield positive results.

Mohammed also pledged his support and readiness to assist in any way possible to facilitate the safe return of the victims.

The governor further used the visit to congratulate Makinde on his emergence as the presidential candidate of the Allied People’s Movement, describing him as an energetic and visionary leader capable of transforming governance in Nigeria.

He called for a thorough review of the nation’s security architecture, stressing the need for stronger collaboration among security agencies and improved cooperation between security operatives and the public to effectively tackle the country’s growing security challenges.
