Sokoto Upgrades, Renames State College After Wamakko

The Sokoto State Government has upgraded and renamed the State College of Basic and Remedial Studies to Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko College of Technology and Advanced Studies.

In a statement issued by the PRO, Ministry for Higher Education Sokoto, Ibrahim Iya said the development followed the signing into law of a bill passed by the Sokoto State House of Assembly by Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto on May 14, 2026.

The Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Isa Muhammad Maishanu, disclosed this during a briefing at his office, saying the move was aimed at immortalising former Sokoto State Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko in recognition of his contributions to the development of education in Sokoto State and Nigeria.

According to the commissioner, the institution has also been upgraded to offer Diploma and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes as part of the present administration’s efforts to expand access to quality and advanced education in the state.

Prof. Maishanu commended Governor Ahmad Aliyu for approving the upgrade and renaming, describing it as a timely and deserving recognition of commitment to educational advancement.

He further revealed that the governor would soon constitute the institution’s Governing Council to strengthen its administration and academic development.
