Tambuwal Mourns Olugbemi, Hails His Legacy

Former Governor of Sokoto State and Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, CFR, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of veteran journalist and prolific writer, Adeniyi Olugbemi, describing his passing as a significant loss to the journalism profession and the media community in Sokoto State and Nigeria.
Tambuwal, in a condolence message issued by his media office, paid tribute to the late journalist’s professionalism, commitment to ethical journalism and dedication to public service.
He described Olugbemi as a committed media practitioner whose fearless reporting, pursuit of truth and promotion of public accountability earned him respect among colleagues and within the wider media industry.
“The death of Adeniyi Olugbemi is a painful loss to the journalism profession and the entire media community. He was a dedicated professional whose commitment to truth, responsible reporting and public accountability made meaningful contributions to our society,” Tambuwal said.
The former governor noted that Olugbemi’s death had created a significant vacuum in the media community, particularly among journalists in Sokoto State, where he spent years reporting on public affairs and contributing to informed public discourse.
According to him, the deceased used his writing to amplify the voices of the less privileged, draw attention to important societal issues and uphold journalism’s role as a pillar of democracy.
“Through his pen, Olugbemi gave voice to the voiceless, brought important issues to public attention and upheld the values of journalism as a critical pillar of democracy. His contributions will remain part of the enduring legacy he leaves behind,” he added.
Tambuwal acknowledged Olugbemi’s extensive career across several media organisations, including Tribune, The Sun, The Punch, Leadership Newspaper and The Triumph Publishing Company.
The late journalist also founded The Guild Magazine, an independent publication through which he continued to contribute to journalism, mentor younger reporters and promote responsible media practice.
Tambuwal said Olugbemi’s wealth of professional experience, humility and dedication to the journalism profession would be greatly missed by colleagues, associates and the many people whose lives he touched through his work.
He extended his condolences to the deceased’s immediate family, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), particularly the Correspondents’ Chapel in Sokoto State, and the entire media community.
“At this difficult moment, my thoughts and prayers are with his immediate family, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, particularly the Correspondents’ Chapel in Sokoto State, and all those who mourn this irreparable loss. May Almighty God grant them the strength and fortitude to bear this painful departure,” he said.
The senator prayed to Almighty God to grant the deceased eternal rest and comfort his family, friends and professional colleagues.
He also urged journalists to sustain the values of integrity, courage, fairness and public service that defined Olugbemi’s professional career.
