The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Correspondents’ Chapel, Sokoto State Council, has expressed grief over the death of veteran journalist and prolific writer, Adeniyi Olugbemi, describing his passing as a major loss to the journalism profession.
Olugbemi died on Saturday, leaving colleagues and members of the media community in Sokoto and beyond mourning his demise.
In a condolence message, the Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Ankeli Emmanuel, described the deceased as a dedicated, hardworking and approachable journalist who upheld the ethics and professional standards of journalism.
Emmanuel said Olugbemi’s death had created a significant vacuum within the chapel, noting that his experience, guidance and contributions to the profession would be greatly missed.
He said the late journalist used his writing to amplify the voices of the voiceless and contributed meaningfully to public discourse through his reports and analysis.
The Chapel’s Secretary, Musa Ubandawaki, also paid tribute to Olugbemi, describing him as a humble and committed professional whose diligence and passion for journalism earned him widespread respect.
Olugbemi, who hailed from Yelwa in Ogun State, built an extensive journalism career across several media organisations in Nigeria.
He began his career as a correspondent with Tribune in Yola, Adamawa State, before working with The Sun and Taraba State Newspaper. He later joined The Punch, where he rose to become the newspaper’s Bureau Chief in Sokoto.
He also worked with Leadership Newspaper and the Sports Desk of The Triumph Publishing Company, establishing a reputation for fearless reporting and analytical writing.
Before his death, Olugbemi founded The Guild Magazine, an independent publication through which he continued to contribute to journalism, mentor young reporters and promote responsible media practice.
The NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel, Sokoto State Council, extended its condolences to his family, friends and associates, praying to God to grant them the strength to bear the loss.
