Tinubu Extends Tenures of Correctional, Immigration Service Chiefs by 18 Months

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved an 18-month extension of the tenures of the heads of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

The affected officers are Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, and Kemi Nanna Nandap, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service.

Following the approval, Nwakuche’s tenure will now run until May 26, 2028, while Nandap will remain in office until June 30, 2028.

The extension followed a recommendation by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, to address a succession gap in both services and provide their governing board with sufficient time to appoint successors.

According to a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, on October 19, 2026, Tinubu commended the two service chiefs for the reforms achieved under their leadership.

The President also charged them to consolidate the gains recorded in their respective agencies during the extended period.

Nwakuche was nominated by President Tinubu as Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service in December 2024, with the Senate confirming his appointment in March 2025.

Similarly, Nandap was nominated as Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service on February 21, 2024, and her appointment was confirmed by the Senate on March 1, 2024.

The tenure extensions are expected to ensure continuity in the leadership of both agencies while arrangements are made for the appointment of their successors.
