Sultan Turbans SeniorCouncillor, 26 District Heads in Bid to Boost Traditional Governance
The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has turbaned the Magajin Garin Sokoto, Alhaji Ahmed Bello Danbaba, as a Senior Councillor in the Sultanate Council, alongside 26 newly appointed District Heads, in a move aimed at strengthening traditional governance across Sokoto State.
The ceremony, held at the Sultan’s Palace in Sokoto, attracted a large gathering of traditional rulers, government officials, Islamic scholars, and community leaders from different parts of the state.
The appointments, which filled vacant district head positions in several communities, received the approval of Governor Ahmed Aliyu as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots administration and improve local leadership structures.
Danbaba’s elevation is seen as particularly significant given his lineage as a descendant of the late Ahmadu Bello, whose influence continues to resonate in Northern Nigeria’s political and cultural landscape.
He also follows in the footsteps of his late father, Alhaji Hassan Danbaba, who previously held the titles of Magajin Garin Sokoto and Senior Councillor, serving the Sultanate for many years.
Addressing the newly turbaned traditional rulers, Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar III urged them to demonstrate fairness, integrity, and compassion in the discharge of their responsibilities.
He emphasised that traditional leaders play vital roles in fostering peace, unity, and social stability, noting that their duties extend beyond ceremonial functions to include active participation in grassroots governance.
The Sultan further called on them to support government initiatives, particularly in the areas of security, education, and socio-economic development, stressing that strong collaboration between traditional institutions and authorities is essential for tackling contemporary challenges.
The event ended with prayers for peace and continued progress in Sokoto State and Nigeria, as dignitaries and well-wishers celebrated the installation of the new custodians of traditional authority.
