Buratai Says Boko Haram Financiers Known, Urges Stronger Security Measures

A former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has stated that individuals financing Boko Haram are known to authorities but declined to hold himself responsible for the non-disclosure of their identities.

Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today, General Buratai explained that relevant agencies are aware of those behind terrorism funding but have reasons for not making their names public. He emphasized that the responsibility for revealing such information does not lie with him.

He also clarified that the rehabilitation of repentant Boko Haram members was a government-led initiative, noting that the military only facilitated their surrender and transfer to appropriate agencies.

Buratai called for improved intelligence gathering and increased recruitment of security personnel to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges.

Despite past assurances by the Federal Government and agencies like the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit that terror financiers had been identified, their names remain undisclosed, which has been sparking ongoing criticism and concerns over transparency.

GaskiyaCast reports that Nigeria continues to grapple with insurgency in the North-East, largely driven by Boko Haram and its factions.
