Sultan Declares Friday as Eid-el-Fitr After Moon Sighting Committee Report
The Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs has announced that the new moon of Shawwal 1447AH was not sighted across Nigeria on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, marking it as the 29th day of Ramadan.
According to the statement issued in conjunction with the National Moon Sighting Committee, Thursday, March 19, 2026, will therefore be observed as the 30th and final day of Ramadan 1447AH.
Following the report, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who also serves as President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, officially declared Friday, March 20, 2026, as the first day of Shawwal and Eid-el-Fitr.
The Sultan congratulated the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria and urged continued prayers for peace, unity, and national development. He also prayed for the acceptance of all acts of worship performed during Ramadan.
