FG Links Animal Welfare to Food Security

The Federal Government says improving animal welfare is key to boosting food security and economic growth in Nigeria.

Speaking at a conference at Obafemi Awolowo University, the Minister of Livestock Development, Mukhtar Maiha, said humane and sustainable livestock practices would enhance productivity, reduce disease outbreaks, and strengthen public health.

He noted that Nigeria must adopt global best practices while addressing local challenges such as climate change and market pressures, adding that the livestock sector remains vital to livelihoods and the economy.

Also speaking, Adetola Ajadi of Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta stressed proper animal care, warning that many human diseases originate from animals.

The event also saw the inauguration of the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare, with the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the minister honoured.
