Sokoto APC Senator Set to Leave Party
Barring any last-minute change, the Senator representing Sokoto East Senatorial District, Ibrahim Lamido, is reportedly set to defect from the All Progressives Congress, APC to the coalition African Democratic Congress, ADC.
Gaskiyacast reports that, socialmedia platforms have been awash with speculation over the senator’s imminent exit from the ruling party, further fueling discussions about shifting political alignments ahead of future elections.
In a show of readiness, the factional Chairman of the APC loyal to Senator Lamido, Alhaji Kabiru Shehu Sarkin Fulani, has tendered his resignation letter from the All Progressive Congress in a letter address to his ward Chairman on Sunday.
The anticipated defection follows a prolonged rift between Lamido and the Sokoto APC leadership, headed by Senator Representing Sokoto North, Aliyu Wamakko. The disagreement reportedly led to the emergence of parallel state party executives loyal to both camps, deepening divisions within the party in Sokoto State.
Sources traced the fallout to the 2023 National Assembly leadership contest. At the time, Wamakko was said to have urged Lamido to support Abdulaziz Yari for Senate President. However, Lamido instead backed Godswill Akpabio, who eventually clinched the position, defeating Yari. The move reportedly strained relations between the two Sokoto political heavyweights.
Since then, Lamido is said to have operated independently, without the backing of the state government or the APC leadership in Sokoto.
Despite the internal party challenges, the Senator has maintained a strong political base, reportedly attracting the support of two serving members of the House of Representatives to his camp.
Political analysts believe that Lamido’s potential defection to the ADC could significantly strengthen the party’s presence in Sokoto State and alter the local political landscape.
