Atiku Abubakar Pledges to Support Whoever Emerges ADC Presidential Candidate Ahead of 2027

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has pledged to support whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an interview with DW Hausa, Atiku dismissed concerns that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) could weaken the party, insisting that the ADC continues to gain traction and attract new members across the country.

His comments come amid tensions between the ADC and INEC, after the electoral body announced it would suspend communication with the party’s leadership and decline to monitor its planned national convention scheduled for April 14, citing a court ruling. The ADC has rejected INEC’s position, accusing the commission of misinterpreting the judgment.

Atiku alleged that powerful interests are working against the party due to its rising popularity. Despite being a presidential aspirant himself, he emphasized unity within the party, assuring that all contenders would rally behind whoever emerges as flagbearer.

He also highlighted the party’s commitment to youth and women inclusion, noting that a large number of its candidates at various levels are young people. According to him, the ADC is deliberately creating opportunities for the younger generation to take leadership roles.

When asked if he would support a younger candidate as president, Atiku responded affirmatively, stressing the importance of securing a better future for coming generations.

On the state of the nation, the former Vice President expressed confidence that Nigerians are eager for change, citing worsening economic hardship and insecurity. He linked the rising insecurity in northern Nigeria to youth unemployment and poor access to education, arguing that neglect in these areas has fueled instability.

Atiku also accused the current administration of failing to tackle corruption, alleging that misconduct within government circles is being overlooked.

Overall, he maintained that Nigerians are increasingly dissatisfied and ready to demand a new direction in the 2027 elections.
